An Einstein Celebration:
Albert Einstein's Legacy—Our
Best Description of the Universe
In celebration of Einstein and the centenary of his "miraculous" year of discovery, 1905, the year 2005 has been named as the International Year of Physics. This special lecture, sponsored by TRIUMF, has been arranged to nearly coincide with the 50th anniversary of Einstein's death on April 18, 1955. Professor Barish is the director of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) the first, very-large, supersensitive system of laser beams intended to observe the gravitational waves, predicted by Einstein, originating from cataclysmic events in outer space. The LIGO experiment has been dubbed: "Einstein's Unfinished Symphony: Listening to the Sounds of Space-Time." Professor Barish has received many honours and is currently a member of the National Science Board which advises the U.S. President and Congress.
