Joining VoIP Islands: ENUM, Border Controllers and VoIP Peering

Now that VoIP technologies are being installed within enterprises, in
service provider networks and increasingly in homes, a new set of problems
has emerged: How to connect these VoIP services to each other. Issues
encountered include technology and management incompatibilities, billing
settlements between providers, call routing and call quality assurance. This
session will describe the current efforts of standard organizations,
government regulators, service providers and vendors to define standard ways
to link these "VoIP islands" without use of the PSTN. The session will
examine the progress of ENUM in the regulatory space, on the public
Internet, within enterprise VoIP networks, and within telephone carriers.

 Questions for Speakers:

When will it be normal for customers of one VoIP service provider to be
able to call customers of another VoIP service provider without the call
being routed through the PSTN?

What type of settlements will be provided for these types of calls? Are
there options other than "sender keeps all?"

What criteria will VoIP carriers insist on before establishing peering
relationships?

Will open (i.e., no prior arrangement) VoIP peering ever be a normal
occurrence?

What kind of security will be needed for VoIP peering?

What role will government regulators play in determining peering
arrangements, both for local and international peering?

-----------

Thanks!
