Can Jazz Be Classical?

Mr. Jackson was named the 2002 National Jazz Awards Socan Composer/Songwriter of the Year. His work has been nominated for 6 Juno Awards and he won the 2000 Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Mr. Jackson writes a regular column for Down Beat magazine entitled "Living Jazz." His notes for his Institute lecture state:

I will trace successful and less-than-successful attempts historically to combine the two worlds and include live performed demonstrations (Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and others). I will also discuss the Lincoln Center/Wynton Marsalis debate about whether jazz should be defined as "America's Classical Music" at all. I will conclude with excerpts from my own attempts in the jazz/classical sphere, performing examples from my "Suite for New York" and discussing my compositional approach to and conception of the work. I will also touch upon my jazz opera "Quebecite" as a work bridging jazz, classical and "beyond."
