What you suggest would be very helpful, but is also a fair amount of
work for the authors/editors.

Going over the drafts one more time would be necessary anyway.  So,
I'm inclined to go with Lou's idea: would the original commentators
check whether their comments have been incorporated, and email either
the list or the editors?  And others are of course invited to reread
and make comments as well.
