Next Steps for P&R Effort

Hello all,

Over the past few weeks, I've been discussing possible extensions to
the protection and restoration analysis draft with that document's
editors. There are several items that I feel would be appropriate to
include in a follow-on draft, and I have listed these below. I am
interested in getting feedback from the group regarding these items
(level of interest in seeing them examined, relative priority of the
various items, etc.) We have already made some progress on a number
of these (e.g. the (M:N)^n analysis and simulations to support items 1
and 2). We would like to initiate work on these soon, in order to
maintain the momentum from the first analysis draft.

The proposed work items are the following:

1. extend recovery scheme tradeoff grid from Section 8 (for correlated
and uncorrelated failures), to include overbooking (quantitative
results would be reported elsewhere and referenced in the draft)

2. develop a classification system for failure recovery schemes (for
correlated and uncorrelated failures), such as those designed for
multiple failure events

3. produce a discussion of multiple uncorrelated failures and
mechanisms to handle them, versus multiple correlated failures

4. provide more detailed discussion of vertical hierarchies, including
an examination of tradeoffs involving top-down versus bottom-up or
coordinated recovery schemes

5. examine the performance of (M:N)^n recovery schemes

6. examine SRLG/SRG recoverability issues

This list is not intended to be exhaustive, and if there are
suggestions for additional items, I would be interested in hearing
them.

Regards,

D. Griffith
