Re: ASON reqts

Hi Kireeti,

G.8080 (ASON Architecture) addresses both signaling and routing, and thereafter the two areas are addressed in separate documents. I agree that it is good to keep these separate from a protocol perspective. I suppose it is OK to write separate requirements documents for each area as long as requirements are not missed in the process. This would still mean that routing or high-level architectural issues that impact signaling should be considered in determining the signaling requirements.

Considering the discussion on the list, I tend to agree with the idea that the ASON requirements have already been documented in G.7713 and G.7715 and creating additional documents that overlap these will likely only add additional confusion. Therefore I'm not convinced that this should be a WG doc, even as signaling only.

Regards,
Ben

Thanks for your input (thanks too to all others who've voiced their

I am principally concerned that routing requirements are not included.
While draft's title is encompassing "GMPLS Usage and Extensions for
ASON," the abstract limits this to signaling only.

You're right -- this document doesn't address routing (and doesn't
profess to). In keeping with other GMPLS work, I think it makes sense
to have separate signaling and routing documents, be they functional
specs, protocol details or requirements. This view appears to be
shared by the ITU-T as well, from what I understand.

In the light of this, I have a question for you:
 - In your opinion, should the document under consideration become a
CCAMP WG _just for signaling_? I.e., if we had a companion doc
that described the routing requirements for ASON, would that meet
   your objection?

Thanks,
Kireeti.
