Re: ASON reqts - Moving on?

Sorry that this has been so long.
First of all, there is good consensus to make the ASON requirements
doc (draft-papadimitriou-ccamp-gmpls-ason-reqts-00.txt) a CCAMP WG
document. Authors, please resubmit it as a WG document.
However, the ADs, seeing signs of World War III on this list for the
umpteenth time, want to be clear where this is going. The rules of
engagement are:
1) We *really* need to make sure that the ITU is in the loop on this --
that they tell us when we get things wrong or we miss things, and
participate actively in reviewing the document. Fortunately, the
draft is based on work done by folks active in the ITU, so we
should have a good start; but we need to keep that up. If this
means regular Liaison statements back and forth, so be it.
2) Regarding whether this work falls under the purview of CCAMP,
CCAMP's charter is to "define signalling protocols and measurement
protocols such that they support ... O-O and O-E-O optical switches",
i.e., optical networks, and ASON is a very important example of an
optical network.
3) It is thus incumbent on us as a group to define the requirements,
and see whether GMPLS measures up; if so, document that; and if not,
decide what needs to be done.
4) Let's do this with grace -- no inter-SDO or any other kind of egg
throwing. It might be less fun that way, but it is definitely
more productive.
Since we are going down this path, I guess I should address Steve's
questions re motivations for this document:
| 5. Those who think that ITU-T didn't get the requirements right, so we
| need to look at everything from scratch.
This is explicitly *not* the intent. A requirement goes into this
document iff:
(a) the ITU-T says, "Yes, that's a requirement for ASON signaling"; and
(b) CCAMP and the ITU-T agree that GMPLS doesn't meet it.
Requirements that are already met MAY be documented, but it is not a
goal to capture all ASON requirements.
Kireeti.
