The question of whether to support "pre-standards" technology is -- by
definition -- a question of whether to spend energy on proprietary history.
There are probably some cases where the answer should be yes. However it
is difficult to believe that this is one of them.
The only serious argument that gets used for such support is "installed
base". That is, a concern that there is such a large installed base of
users that it is necessary to the success of the standard, that transition
support be provided.
Without in any way demeaning the pre-standards IDN efforts, it is difficult
to believe that it can claim that large an installed base or that
"essential" an installed base.
