NAME of I-D

  http://search.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-tsenevir-l2vpn-gre-00.txt

SUMMARY:

This I-D discuss use of Generic Routing Encapsulation as a method to
provide Ethernet Layer 2 VPN services. Solutions discussed in this document

allows providers to provision Ethernet Layer 2 VPN services across public IP

networks.

WHERE DOES IT FIT IN THE PICTURE OF THE SUB-IP WORK

PPVPN

WHY IS IT TARGETED AT THIS WG

PPVPN WG charter include providing Layer 2 VPN services. A new design team
has been formed to investigate requirements and solutions needed "Metro LAN"

space. This ID is submitted as a possible candidate document either under
"Metro LAN" or Layer 2 VPN.

JUSTIFICATION

Layer 2 VPN services are gaining popularity in emerging metro services
infrastructure. Ability provide Layer 2 VPN service using IP tunnels
facilitates providers to provision Layer 2 VPN services across Internet,
without relying on specific tunneling protocols such as MPLS. GRE is less
complex than IPsec, hence could be easily used in deployments that does not
mandate security requirements and in private networks that does not deploy
protocols such as MPLS.
