Re: Support for XXX OID value

I was the one who tried to get MIB Doctors
to accept the concept of a NULL pointer for OIDs.
They didn't want it.

What is NULL? It's a *valid* value for the syntax,
but the compiler attaches special semantics to the
value zero in a pointer. This causes a runtime error
instead of a compile-time error. Big difference.

So we have an invalid token in all I-D MIBs instead,
which has to be changed just to read the MIB into a compiler.
IMO, this is the correct approach, because it is too late to
change all the MIB compilers in use to recognize any particular
OID value as NULL.

We learned the hard way if you put valid bogus OIDs in I-D MIBs,
then people will release product with the bogus OIDs without
even realizing they are doing it. { experimental 999999 } :-)

Better, let us 'last call' this conclusion.

Does anybody have a problem with considering that errors generated by

myExampleMIB MODULE-IDENTITY
...
     ::= { mib-2 XXX }
-- RFC Ed.: replace XXX with IANA-assigned number & remove this note

should be considered a feature and not a bug and need not be fixed in tools and compilers recommended for MIB Reviews?
I agree that this is a feature.

Agree also.
