getting virtual elements

I'm concerned about implementing <get-config> for virtual elements (my term for elements like interface/ifInOctets which are not part of an actual NETCONF document.  Can this be done simply and efficiently?

What tools would you recommend?  I'm currently experimenting with Xerces-C++.
