all too well. There were great discussions of the degree to which  
they improved things. On some hardware, they reportedly vastly  
increased throughput; on other hardware, they made no difference  
whatsoever. On a router I designed in that timeframe (the company now  
being defunct), I provided the practical option of treating trailers  
as there for the convenience of the sender more than the receiver,  
and therefore converting from trailer to header format in the router.

There are days I feel old. It would be better to feel wise, but my  
experience with people whose opinion of themselves is that they are  
wise is that their estimate of themselves often exceeds other  
opinions of them :-)
