I was referring specifically to a DSL deployment if the network uses
PPP. Of course, for other flavors of deployment, one has to work out
details to see how much automation is possible with the CPE Router
configuration. Also, note, if a DSL deployment uses embedded router (DSL
modem combined with a CPE Router), then the device vendor has complete
flexibility for lot of automatic configuration because the L2 of the DSL
modem can communicate with the embedded CPE Router; likewise for an
embedded router in a cable modem. See my earlier email where I said we
are focused more on Conceptual Configuration variables that may be left
to a vendor to use to automate whatever they would like to for
configuration.
