Which might actually be considered the right way forward: experience the
brokenness, and *repair it while still possible*

I run my home network with MTU 1500 via an ADSL link with MTU 1492, and
this has caused me to find a few brokennesses in PMTU discovery already
- and most of them have been fixed now :-)
