Or maybe try to set the ssl certificate directory to a place where
ssl.el will find (more) ssl certificates.  On Debian/GNU Linux a
bundle of common CA certificates resides in /etc/ssl/certs

(setq ssl-certificate-directory "/etc/ssl/certs")
