I've not used Aquamacs before.

I notice that the page you refer to doesn't make any mention of
pointing Emacs to your wanderlust distribution. Do you have something
like:

(add-to-list 'load-path "/Users/you/.emacs.d/wanderlust/elmo")
(add-to-list 'load-path "/Users/you/.emacs.d/wanderlust/utils")
(add-to-list 'load-path "/Users/you/.emacs.d/wanderlust/wl")
(setq wl-icon-directory "/Users/you/.emacs.d/wanderlust/etc/icons")

anywhere? (I'm not sure how M-x wl would work at all without any of
this anyway.)

Are you using the CVS version?

In your wanderlust/wl/ directory you should have a file called
wl-news.el.
