I used to use wl-beta from Debian unstable until maybe a year ago.
The current Debian unstable package is 2.15.9+0.20100525-3 and it's
maintained by Tatsuya Kinoshita.
The current Ubuntu package is 2.15.6+0.20090322-1 and it's maintained
by "Ubuntu MOTU Developers".
I can't offer a personal opinion on the differences as I've never used
Ubuntu or its wl-beta package.

I find it quite painless.
