It seems like the discussion is getting back down to earth a bit :o)

I think Eric's point was that arbitrary concatenation is only
incidental to GMPLS, as Greg pointed out in one of the early
emails it is a feature of newer chips.  GMPLS drafts probably
have a leaning towards leading edge features because GMPLS
itself or optical routing is a sort of leading edge feature. 

Hopefully people can use GMPLS as a way to route connections
to take advantage of the availability of new features in an 
optical network, so that it opens up possibilities more than
it causes problems.

BTW, I suspect that virtual concatenation raises more issues
for GMPLS than it does for the transport level - suppose that
you send component channels along different routes, for 
example, you would need to be able to correlate multiple
signaling messages as being part of the same connection
when they are received at the termination point.
