I don't know whether the above use of "IDN" refers to this working group
or some larger problem statement. I'm assuming you mean the WG.
If updating RFC 822, 2822 for smtp as well as all other application protocols
was in scope for the IDN working group, they would have been explicitly
listed in the WG charter.
They are not.
Having said that, when thinking about different solutions to the
Internationalized Domain Name problem it is critical to understand the
impact on the application protocols (and other "users" of domain names)
in particular as it relates to the transition.
