RE: bandwidth mobility
This discussion reinforces in my mind the idea of 3G as "the network of last resort". Our discussion centers more on "bandwidth will be available" than it does on "we can do interesting things in the available bandwidth". Indeed in my experience it has always been the case in such discussions, and there is something quite natural about it, tracking expected human behavior. When a data user enters a space with multiple internet connectivity options, his/her first choice might be OC3 (if he/she doesn't have to move), then ethernet or 802.11 or BRAN or Hiperlan or cable or DSL, then Bluetooth-like connectivity, then 3G wireless. The user doesn't think "what can I do here, given resources are limited". The user thinks, "the services I wan't are / are not available here and and are / are not affordable and do / do not perform satisfactorily."
Thinking of narrowband wireless as "the low end" is risky, though: in some situations (and these are situations in which billions of dollars will change hands, if I may be so bold as to introduce an economic consideration into the discussion), narrowband wireless is the only end.

I agree that the low end will always be attractive to someone. What
I was trying to say is that I think there are possibilities for
bandwidth management that are not there right now because of a lack
of mechanism for intertechnology handover and a lack of support
in the mobiles. Whether or not software defined radios ever pan
out is an open question. Intertechnology handover is an easier
problem to solve I think, but there are still issues. What I'm
trying to say is that I don't think we should structure the
requrirements based on an assumption that bandwidth is always
cheap and limitless, or that it is always constrained and expensive.
If the currently "hot" 802.11 provider scenerios play out, bandwidth
will be lots cheaper and more available in certain cases, but
still limited in others.
