RE: Where to root MIB modules - descriptors

HI,

This message is to explain what I meant about descriptors.

I thought you were proposing that OID assignments be given
in "stable snapshot" versions of a MIB module that is
to start the standards track. That is, do a pre-release(s)
of the document so that vendors could ship products.
Each stable snapshot would have a different OID root
and according to the rules would also require unique
descriptor values. I proposed that a algorythmic approach
be used to create descriptors in the stable snapshots.
Of course, this can result in the undesirable result
of having multiple objects, notifications, and TCs
that are essentially the same.

I don't believe that you can just change the semantics
of objects (such as changing the indexing, data type,
or meaning) and keep the same OID value for the object
type. These changes would look like defects in the
implementation!

Hope this is clear.
