The typical functionality of the-box-that-terminates-the-access-medium
may be different for different access technologies. E.g. for
DSL/copper the common choice seems to be L3, whereas for Cable and
Fiber L2 seems more common, for wireless (WiMax etc) ..? . Both models
are valid I guess. Also it doesn't change much wrt the functionality
of the first L3 CPE (if present), the first L3 node may be a host
though, instead of a router.
