NNTP and killed messages?

I have mistakenly hit “d” on messages in an NNTP newsgroup and found
that they never come back.  In fact, “D” means the whole thread never
comes back.

Is there a way to recover these messages?  I'm guessing deleting the
“killed” file might do it, but I hope there's a more seemly way to do
it in the emacs UI.
