wanderlust is sooo slooowww...

Greetings:

Been using Wanderlust for a couple years now.  Worked great up until a
few months back whereupon searching folders became just plain borked
and checking imap folders dog slow (e.g. 2-3 secs vs. 12-15 secs).
Been using the package supplied by Archlinux.  Until recently (emacs
24.4) wanderlust-20140210-1 worked while anything
wanderlust-20140515-1 and later exhibited problems cited above.  Post
emacs 24.4 I've had to update to wanderlust-20141021-1, wh/just
freakin sucks to the point that I'm exploring alternatives such as
gnus and mu4e.

Previously reported this 20140521 but no response.  Note that since
then I've discovered that search will work on suitably small folders
w/few messages.

Would prefer to stick with Wanderlust but need some help in debugging
this, as I'm not a e/lisp guy.
