RE: Last Call: Handling of Unknown DNS Resource Record Types to Proposed Standard

IESG:

The IANA has reviewed the following Internet-Draft which is in
Last Call: <draft-ietf-dnsext-unknown-rrs-05.txt>, and has the
following comments with regards to the publication of this document:

The IANA Considerations section seems fine but it brings up
some questions that hopefully you can help with.

I see the Resource Record (RR) TYPEs and QTYPEs RR are registered
at the following:

<http://www.iana.org/assignments/dns-parameters>

In my days with the IANA hat on I have not done a whole lot of work
with RR assignments. I belive RFC1035 defines the space, and I have
also looked through a couple other RFCs but have not found concrete
instructions to the IANA on how these get assigned.

If it is through IETF consensus/RFC publication needed, then I'm
OK with the request that this document has of not assiging numbers
to new RR types whose specification allows embedded domain names
to be compressed as there will be "expert" type folks reviewing the
document.

If there are no specific instructions, would this document be
appropriate to include some?

Can you help clarify this for IANA? :)

Please respond to the IANA about our concerns with regards to this
document. Failing to do so may cause delay of the approval and
publication of your document.

Thank you.
