Dear All,

The ISO 3166-1 Newsletter announcing the change from "Yugoslavia" to "Serbia
and Montengro" and stating the new alphabetic code elements of the country,
"CS" and "SCG", has been published today.

You can download this document from the section "Updates on ISO 3166" on our
website:
http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/03updates-on-iso- 3166/ind
ex.html

The codes CS and SCG allow a visual association with the country's name
components in the national language: "Srbija" (Serbia) and "Crna Gora"
(Montenegro). The codes SC, SM or MS - other possible candidates for the
country name - are already taken by other countries. See the decoding table
of the alpha-2 code in the "ISO 3166 Code lists" section if you want to know
which country names they stand for:
http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/02iso-3166-code- lists/iso
_3166-1_decoding_table.html

Please note that the alpha-2 code "CS" represented "Czechoslovakia" in ISO
3166-1 until 1993. After the split-up of the country into "Czech Republic"
and "Slovakia" in 1993 it remained on the list of reserved codes until now.
This is only the second time since 1974 that a withdrawn code element has
been re-assigned to a new country name.

You will also find the third Newsletter on ISO 3166-3 "Code for formerly
used names of countries" on the "Updates on ISO 3166" page (scroll down to
the bottom of the page). It announces the inclusion of the name Yugoslavia
into the third part of ISO 3166.

I hope you find this information useful.

Best regards
