You're not up there to be superior, you're up there to be the target
for disenchanted folks to take aim at if they don't like what you've
done. :-)

Seriously though, removing the requirement to be *visibly* present and
attentive would leave us even more open to accusations of being a
secretive inner circle that isn't held responsible for its actions.

On the other hand, I've also had the perception sometimes that the
arrangement of the room causes a more confrontational atmosphere than
is strictly necessary, where the IESG or IAB appear to be responding
defensively rather than appearing to consider the comments raised.
