Professor Daron Acemoglu

will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on September 23, 2006 at 8:15 p.m., Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Professor Acemoglu earned his bachelor's degree at the University of York in England, and then his master's and doctorate at the London School of Economics. Growing up in Turkey during a tumultuous period of economic crises and political unrest, he often wondered why his country's development lagged that of the United States and other industrialized nations. His subsequent groundbreaking work in explaining that gap between rich and poor nations recently helped him win the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded by the American Economic Association to the nation's top economist under 40. Acemoglu, 37, joins an elite club that includes eleven Nobel Prize recipients. He is coauthor of the recently published book, Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy.
