There are already updates due to go in RFC 2674, to support the IEEE 802.1t,
IEEE 802.1u and IEEE 802.1v extensions.  These changes were proposed in a draft
(long since expired, and still requires some work) available at
http://www.watersprings.org/pub/id/draft-ietf-bridge-ext-v2-01.txt
