RE: Last Call for the ifType References table (was: RE: IfType references)

The Last Call concluded yesterday. I would like to declare the consensus
as follows:

1. There was agreement that this table is useful, should be made
publicly available and maintained on the OPS area Web pages.
2. Two of the contributors provided detailed comments concerning the
table content (with special mention to Keith). My understanding is that
Bert accepted the comments, asked for clarification on some issues, and
will update the table accordingly, maybe after his vacation.

Six people answered the last Call.

Only one of the respondents, Dave Perkins, argued that the table should
rather be maintained within the IANAifType-MIB module maintained at IANA
(http://www.iana.org/assignments/ianaiftype-mib. David also suggested a
format to translate the information in the table into MIB comments to
the enumerated values in the MIB. This opinion did not register support
from other participants in the dialog, and I would suggest that it is
out of consensus. The table purpose is to be a tool maintained by the
OPS area, while the IANAifType-MIB module is a registry. There is more
detailed information in the table that does not belong in the registry
and may change while values of ifType do not change. In any case, the
format proposal concerns more or first of all IANA, so if this seems
important, I would recommend that David submits it to IANA.

Last but not least, I would like to thank to folks who responded with
comments, to Dave Thaler who triggered the proposal and made the initial
pass and to Bert who put it on the Web site.

Dan
