Node A could be sending and receiving while there is a failure, but in that case, B wouldn't be receiving data. So if both sides do this, it works well.

I would think that if one side triggers reachability testing, the other side would also do it.
wouldn't this mean assuming bidirectional connectivity?

The probes in one direction can also function as replies in the other direction, cutting down on the number of packets exchanged.
