Looking Ahead to Vienna... and beyond.

Hi All,

It is time to start thinking about what we want to do for
WG chairs training in Vienna... and beyond.

I have some thoughts about what we may want to do in the
short term (for Vienna) and some further ideas about what
we may want to do longer term, in two areas:

	- Introductory WG chairs training, and
	- Training/development for experienced chairs.

INTRODUCTORY TRAINING

For Vienna, I think that Jeff Schiller and I should update
the current materials based on feedback received at our meeting
and on the WG chairs training mailing list, and we should
deliver the session, as usual.

Longer term, there have been a couple of non-exclusive suggestions
about what to do with this session:

	- Transform the existing materials into a web-based
tutorial that can be used during formal
classes or for self-paced learning. The
materials could include pointers to existing
web resources, etc. [This might require
resources, such as tools or a good web
		designer.]
	- Expand the introductory training to two or three
sessions, and rotate those sessions throughout
the IETF year. New chairs would be encouraged
to attend at least one full cycle.

Do folks think that it would make sense to form a small team
(maybe 6-8 people) to consider options for introductory chairs
training and make a recommendation?

EXPERIENCED CHAIRS

In San Francisco, we discussed the need for ongoing development
for continuing chairs. There was interest in formal training, and
in more open discussion sessions on topics of interest. There
was some thought that we might combine these into a single meeting,
that covered one formal topic, followed by discussion...

Have people thought any more about what we need in this area?

From the discussion in SF, I captured the following suggestions for
training topics:

	- IPR policies and how to deal with them.
	- Tools for issue/action item tracking.
	- Tools for document sharing & change control.
	- John Cleese "Meetings, Bloody Meetings" video.
	- Decision making/process skills.

Would folks like to see a formal session on one of these topics in
Vienna? If so, which one?

Also, do people think that a more informal discussion session would be
useful? If so, do you think that we should pick a particular topic?
Or, have an open discussion on any topic?

If we decide what we want to do, I don't think that we will have
any trouble getting a room in Vienna for this session. We could
probably also hold another lunch meeting, if that is desired.

How do people want to move forward on this?

My suggestion for Vienna: Hold another lunch training session,
with a short presentation on what WG chairs need to know/do about
IPR issues (~20-30 min), followed by an informal discussion session
on one of the following topics:

	- Getting WG members more engaged.
	- Improving document quality.
	- The role of the WG chair.
	- How to choose/develop good document editors.
	- Method for issue tracking and change control.

Other suggestions are encouraged.
