P.S. He also said that it may all be moot if IEEE ignores
issues and only lets any media have 1500 no matter what - his
organization is working on that side of things too, as folks thought.
hmmm....
it's already pretty plain that fairly hefty organizations are ignoring IEEE
on this issue, and allowing jumbograms (of some size) on the LAN (see the
recent spat about jumbograms and IS-IS).
Having differently-sized MTUs in a single LAN will certainly give fun
problems - I understand why IEEE doesn't want to go there, even though I
don't think they are making the right decision.
We'll probably have to deal with it anyway - by saying "if you connect to
LANs that break the IEEE standards in this way, here's information on how
to behave sensibly"....
