hmmm....
it's already pretty plain that fairly hefty organizations are ignoring IEEE on this issue, and allowing jumbograms (of some size) on the LAN (see the recent spat about jumbograms and IS-IS).

Having differently-sized MTUs in a single LAN will certainly give fun problems - I understand why IEEE doesn't want to go there, even though I don't think they are making the right decision.

We'll probably have to deal with it anyway - by saying "if you connect to LANs that break the IEEE standards in this way, here's information on how to behave sensibly"....
