Crimes Against Humanity in the Democratic Republic of Congo:
The Challenges of Investigating and Prosecuting Cases Before the International Criminal Court

In 2002 Mr. MacDonald, a Canadian lawyer, became the Prosecutor with the Serious Crimes Unit of the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor and in 2005 he joined the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. In 2008 he was appointed as a Senior Trial Lawyer at the ICC. Mr. Macdonald has led the prosecution in a number of high profile cases including the case against Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjool, and Lendu and Ngiti, militia leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mr. Macdonald is currently leading the prosecution in the case against Laurent Gbagbo, the former President of the Côte d'Ivoire and the first head of state to be taken into custody by the ICC following a period of civil war.
