Professor MacLachlan is an expert in designing and developing new materials through chemistry. Using nature as a source of inspiration, he has recently developed new glasses that mimic the iridescent colours of beetle shells. He has published over 100 papers including research articles in Science and Nature. He has received the Killam Research Prize, the Strem Award for Pure or Applied Inorganic Chemistry of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship from NSERC, an invitational fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Rutherford Medal of the Royal Society of Canada. He is also an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. In 2008, he received a Killam Prize for Teaching and, in 2013, he received the Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring.
