On Cruelty:
Costs and Consequences of America’s Use of Torture as a Weapon of War

Mr. Mora was appointed General Counsel of the Navy by President George W. Bush in 2001. Upon learning about coercive interrogation tactics at Guantanamo Bay, he led a legal effort within the Defense Department to end these techniques which he felt were not only unlawful but also a fundamental threat to the American Constitution and its standing in the world as an exemplary democracy. Mr. Mora was featured in the 2008 Academy award-winning documentary Taxi to the Dark Side and also Torturing Democracy. For his efforts, Mora was honored with the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in 2006. This lecture is cosponsored by UBC’s Sing Tao School of Journalism.
