will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on October 20, 2007 at 8:15 p.m., Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Dr. Packer attended college at Stanford where he met Jane Goodall and became her field assistant at Gombe National Park in Tanzania, studying baboons. He subsequently attended the University of Sussex where he obtained his PhD. After a three year break from Africa, he returned to Tanzania in 1978 to take over the Serengeti lion project which he has run ever since. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1990, which enabled him to spend a year at Oxford University and to write his book, Into Africa, which won the John Burroughs Medal in 1994. He has written dozens of articles for Science and Nature, as well as stories for National Geographic, Scientific American, and Natural History.
