will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on October 13, 2007 at 8:15 p.m., Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Professor Sachs, writer and music historian, has published eight books—of which there are now more than 50 editions in 15 languages—including well-known biographies of Arturo Toscanini and Arthur Rubinstein, two collections of essays on musical subjects, and, as co-author, the memoirs of Plácido Domingo and Sir Georg Solti. His most recent published volume is The Letters of Arturo Toscanini, and he is currently working on a book on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony within the historical context of the year 1824. Sachs has written for the New Yorker, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Times Literary Supplement (London), La Stampa and dozens of other newspapers and periodicals, as well as for BBC, CBC, PBS, RAI and other radio and television networks. He is former Artistic Director of Italy’s most prestigious concert organization, the Società del Quartetto di Milano.
