will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on November 1, 2014 at 8:15 p.m., Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Professor Townsend-Gault is a faculty associate in the Department of Anthropology at UBC; Professor Kramer is a curator, Pacific Northwest, at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology; and Ḳi-ḳe-in is a Nuuchaanulth with forty years’ experience as a Potlatch Speaker and ritualist on the Westcoast. Their recent book, the subject of their lecture, makes accessible for the first time in one place a broad selection of the 250 years of writing on Northwest Coast art. Organized thematically, the excerpted texts are from both published and unpublished sources, some not previously available in English. The contributors provide perspectives on the diverse intellectual traditions that have influenced, stimulated, and clashed with each other.
