|protocol require that all packets follow a top-down routing strategy?
First, it's not a protocol issue, it's an architecture issue. As I
mentioned previously, hybrid forwarding architectures that support both
hop-by-hop and specialized forwarding schemes have been proposed and have
been widely ignored before. Please see RFC 1668 as an example. Please note
the authors. ;-)
It's definitely not out of the question, but to assert that folks really
want this now implies that there's been some change in conditions that would
make this feasible from a deployment and business model perspective. I
certainly haven't seen any indication of that. Why now? What's changed?
