BGP communities
CDNs (e.g. Akamai)
InterNAP-style optimized BGP

Quite an industry has sprung up in the last half decade founded on the
idea of hyper-optimizing the network path between your content and
your customer. Such systems can address factors that traditional
routing schemes can't, like end-to-end packet loss.
