I have very large IMAP folders, and experience a freeze perhaps
once/month at most. I agree more frequent freezes would be very
annoying.

I stick to a stable Emacs version; perhaps this is part of the
problem?

Yes indeed, network issues seem to be the primary issue with
freezes. I believe there has been much discussion of these issues
previously on the list.

Personally I dedicate an Emacs instance to WL, you could try that.
