The server is barely loaded, much less overloaded.

Yes, downgrading used to fix the problem for all of the interim arch
releases between the two cited.  With the latest Emacs update, I can
no longer use 20140210-1 and still have it respect themes.  Search
does work and it's not dog slow though.

This is a highly likely a Wanderlust issue.
