A graduate of Oxford and the Université de Paris, Sir John Daniel has played a critical role in the evolution of higher education in Canada and the United Kingdom, as Vice-President of Athabasca University, Vice-Rector of Concordia University, President of Laurentian University, and Vice-Chancellor of the UK's Open University. In 2001 he became Assistant Director-General for Education in UNESCO, a post he held until 2004, when he assumed the presidency of The Commonwealth of Learning (COL). Based in Vancouver, the COL assists Commonwealth member governments to take full advantage of open, distance and technology-mediated learning strategies. It is the only Commonwealth agency headquartered outside the UK.
