My Own Medicine:
A Doctor's Life As a Patient

A long-distance runner, Dr. Kurland's life changed dramatically at 41 when he was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia, a rare form of leukemia that carried a high mortality. Dr. Kurland's control over his life and work was lost, and he now had to undergo procedures he had performed on his young patients. Through the process of his evaluation, treatment, and complications, Dr. Kurland experienced the power of disease over the individual. Now some 14 years in remission, Dr. Kurland has written a book about his experience. The New York Times wrote that the book could be seen as "required reading for every medical professional." The New Yorker called it an "energetic, nervy narrative." Dr. Kurland will discuss his experience and the lessons he learned as he battled to remission.
