What's the Point of Classical Music?
Described by the Globe & Mail in 2000 as "possibly the most interesting pianist in the world," David Owen Norris left Oxford, where he was Organ Scholar of Keble College, with First Class Honours and a Composition Scholarship. He made many hundreds of BBC programmes as a pianist before he became involved with radio presentation in 1988. He had his own series on Radio 3, "The Works," which ran for several years. One-off specials have included acclaimed programmes on Elgar and on Pianism. The Daily Telegraph called his BBC2 television documentary on period performance "the most literate and probing programme on music seen in a long while." In 1991 an American foundation appointed him the very first Gilmore Artist, after a long search amongst the world's finest pianists. This award has led to a busy international solo career, playing all over North America and Australia, and in every European country from Hungary westward.
