FIRST ANNUAL UBC MULTICULTURALISM LECTURE

To celebrate Canada's National Multicultural Day, we invite you to attend the UBC Lecture on Multiculturalism presented by CBC Radio and Television. This lecture series is made possible by a grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage, Western Region.
This free event will be held on June 22, 2004, 7:00PM at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC.
We are delighted to announce that award-winning Canadian filmmaker Mina Shum will be the featured guest speaker for this year's lecture entitled New Day Rising: Journey of a Hyphenated Girl. Shum, born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, rose to fame with her film Double Happiness, which premiered at the 1994 Toronto International Film Festival and went on to win critical acclaim in Vancouver, Torino and Berlin. The film struck a chord with Canadians who straddle the divide between fighting and accepting cultural roots and carving a sense of self. By sharing specific stories of how she came to embrace her hyphenation in her lecture, Shum hopes to celebrate and encourage all unique selves.
Shum's most recent film, Long Life, Happiness, and Prosperity, has appeared at more than 20 international film festivals and has received international recognition. Shum has a BA in Theatre and a diploma in Film Production from UBC and was a director resident at the Canadian Film Centre.
Music group Tandava will perform enchanting world music to set the evening. Tandava is a contemporary world music ensemble inspired by the folk and classical music of India and Bangladesh, with influences from China, the Middle-East, Africa and the West. Virtuosic tabla and world drum styles, with polyphonic marimba underpinnings, create the rhythmic and textural engine for lyrical erhu, multilingual vocals, bamboo flutes, distinctive guitar stylings, and various plucked stringed instruments to soar over. Their repertoire consists of original compositions and original arrangements of traditional pieces.
Hosted by Paul Kennedy, the lecture will be broadcast across the country on the Ideas program on CBC Radio One (690 AM Vancouver) on June 25 @ 9:05PM. A feature documentary based on the lecture will be produced for CBC Newsworld. After the lecture, audience members will have the opportunity to address Mina in a Q & A session moderated by Paul. This event will prove to be interactive, entertaining, and thought provoking.

The lecture by Professor Kelly Oliver, Why So Many People Feel Unloved and Unlovable, originally scheduled for April 3, has been postponed until the Fall. Professor Shelley Wachsmann will be speaking in her stead.
