Hi,

There are two principles in conflict here: 1) default settings should
reflect the preferred setting of the majority of users; 2) default
settings should not change between versions, because it is confusing
to users who expect the old default. At some point I believe that (1)
will outweigh (2), that is, so many users prefer a different default
that this outweighs the pain of users who prefer the old default
making a change. I don’t know where this point lies.

I do feel strongly that mime-edit-split-message should be nil by
default. WL is the only mailer I know that supports this, and early on
in my WL usage I managed to spam somebody with a great many messages
because I did not know that I wanted it set to il.

best, Erik
