The author of many books and articles in the fields of women's history, U.S. politics, and civil rights, he is also a forceful and engaging speaker. For many years he has been a leader in the effort to bring interdisciplinary studies to higher education. His first book, The American Woman [1972], was a pathbreaking monograph in what has become one of the most dynamic sub-disciplines in History.
