will be addressing the Vancouver Institute on November 21 at 8:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall No. 2 in the Woodward Instructional Resources Centre, University of British Columbia.
Rethinking the Foundations of Environmentalism
Dr. Cronon is an historian specializing in environmental, frontier and western history. He is the author of several books including Nature's Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West [1991] and Uncommon Ground: Rethinking the Human Place in Nature [1996]. The former book was awarded a 1992 Bancroft Prize and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award for the Best Nonfiction Book of 1991. Past President of the American Society for Environmental History, his work combines the disciples of history, geography and environmental studies. He is particularly well-known for his highly controversial work, Trouble with Wilderness, about the history of ideas of wilderness - a work which continues to provoke spirited debate.
